Mike Gardner dominates second Heritage race at Cadwell Park

Mike Gardner made amends for missing out on victory in race one by dominating the second Zig Zag Lighting Heritage Formula Ford championship encounter at Cadwell Park.

Gardner, who was passed by Jaap Blijleven in the closing stages of the first race, took the lead away from his Dutch rival at the start of race two having made the better start, sweeping around the outside of the Reynard at Coppice.

Biljleven lost a further place to Scott Guthrie during the opening lap and then spent several laps trying to reclaim second place from Guthrie, before finally getting past on the inside of Coppice approaching mid-distance.

By this stage, Gardner had built up a 7.5s lead. But any hopes of Blijleven closing that gap were soon dashed as Gardner continued to lap quicker, extending his advantage to 15.226s by the chequered flag in his Crossle 32F.

Blijleven finished second to further reduce to points deficit to absent championship leader Ollie White, despite coming under renewed pressure from Guthrie in the last couple of laps.

Guthrie tried to snatch second from Blijleven but spun off at Coppice as a result, costing him a podium finish in the process.

Despite having to take avoiding action of the spinning Guthrie, Tom Roark claimed his first Heritage FF podium after a spectacular drive from the back row of the grid in his Van Diemen – having suffered a driveshaft failure in race one – pulling off a number of overtakes during the race.

Christopher Stones finished fourth, also in a Van Diemen, a further 3s behind, while Guthrie rejoined from his spin to take fifth and maintain a healthy lead in the Class B Championship.

Simon Davey finished sixth, despite battling Stones for fourth early on, with Neil Hunt taking seventh in his Mondiale.

Graham Woodin beat Don Boyack to ninth place by 0.3s, while David Roark, a non-starter in race one, rounded out the top ten.

Ian Ferninhough did not start the race after a technical issue with his Swift which caused him to retire in the first race.
