Callum Grant grabs pole at his home race

Callum Grant has made another return to the HSCC Historic Formula Ford championship and will start the first race at Oulton Park from pole.

Oulton Park is Bolton man Grant’s home circuit and he posted a confident time of 1m50.894s, almost half a second ahead of his nearest rival Pierre Livingston.

The race looks to be a straight battle between Grant and Livingston, in the absence of Cameron Jackson who has elected not to contest this round, due to an intense upcoming racing timetable.

Danny Stanzl was third fastest, behind a Merlyn Mk20 front row, his Elden Mk8 1.2s back. He displaced Clive Richards’s Mk20 with a rapid last lap, pipping him to third by 0.011s.

Richards was the leading Radio Caroline Over 50 driver and will be hoping to repeat his heroics at the end of the 2018 season, when he claimed a podium at Brands in one of his first-ever Formula Ford races.

Livingston’s Classic Team Merlyn team-mate Benjamin Tusting was a little off the pace compared to his usual performances and will start from sixth, behind Matt Wrigley’s Lotus 59.

Another driver not having the best qualifying session was Over 50 championship leader Rob Smith, who experienced problems early on and will start from tenth.

Early pacesetter Ted Pearson made a welcome return in his Merlyn Mk11/17. His car is running again after incurring some serious damage at Croft earlier in the month. He will start from seventh.

Eighth-placed Brian Morris (Lola T202) was just a tenth quicker than Ross Drybrough’s Merlyn in ninth. A second of Drybrough’s cars, a March, was meant to be racing but did not enter qualification.
