Team Dolan’s Ross Martin secured pole for the first BRSCC Avon Tyres National Formula Ford 1600 race at Croft, well clear of the chasing pack.
In the first half of the 15-minute session, the Team Dolan driver was trading the top spot with B-M Racing’s Rory Smith and Cliff Dempsey Racing’s James Clarke, before Martin pulled clear on the halfway mark.
Clarke closed to within a few tenths of the Scot with just a handful of minutes remaining, but Martin’s penultimate lap pulled him clear of the Ray driver.
Smith faded as the session came to a close and was unable to make the leap onto the front row, finishing just under one-tenth slower than Clarke, taking third on his penultimate lap.
Anglesey polesitter Spike Kohlbecker also set his personal best on his penultimate lap, jumping several places as he continued to find pace around the North Yorkshire circuit.
Neil Maclennan rounded out the top five. The Kevin Mills Racing driver was running in the top two as the session got underway, but had two faster laps deleted for exceeding track limits.
Reigning F1 eSports champion Brendon Leigh secured sixth on his Croft debut, leaving it late to relegate Jonathan Browne to seventh, the last of the drivers within a second of championship leader Martin’s pole time.
Jamie Sharp took ninth, with Border Reivers driver Jamie Thorburn – who complained of a lack of straight-line speed in Friday testing – rounding out the top ten.
