Simon Hadfield wins under safety car in second Donington Classic encounter

Simon Hadfield won the second Classic Formula Ford 1600 encounter at the Donington Masters meeting, as his main rival Ben Tinkler crashed out.

Hadfield started second in his Lotus 59 and fought off Rick Morris’s Royale from the line, quickly establishing a small lead.

Tinkler, on the other hand, started from the back of the grid having not finished Race One.

Within a couple of laps, he had worked his way up to fifth, before taking another lap to catch up to Hadfield.

The two traded the lead multiple times per lap until a collision with backmarker Robin Haslam (Alexis Mk15) put Tinkler out of the race and brought out the safety car with about seven minutes to go.

The marshals were unable to clear both cars in time so the race ended behind the safety car.

Tim Harvey was awarded second place, having kept a steady presence behind the leading pair, but his chief rivals, Mark Armstrong (Van Diemen) and Rick Morris (Royale), were dropped down the order to seventh and fifth by five-second penalties for exceeding track limits.

Simon Jackson inherited third in his ex-Nigel Mansell Javelin. Kevin Mansell’s Crossle 32F was fourth, having avoided trouble.

Morris and Armstrong were frustrated by the stewards’ decision, especially as Armstrong had made a good start and Morris had recovered from a mistake late on at Roberts.

Alongside Hadfield, in one of the oldest cars on the grid, Matthew Wrigley and Stuart Kestenbaum represented Class B, finishing sixth and eighth. Wrigley had made his way through from the back of the grid.

Returning driver Joe Walton and Steve Pearce completed the top ten.
