Jordan Harrison wins thrilling Donington contest

Jordan Harrison was a worthy winner of the first BARC Classic FF1600 race at Donington, fending off Rick Morris and Simon Hadfield.

Harrison maintained a slender lead in his Lola T540E for most of the second part of the race after making an excellent restart following a safety car period.

He had started in ninth place, progressing to second within the first couple of laps. He hung on impressively considering how his rivals were using him for slipstreaming.

Hadfield was the early leader in a Class B Lotus 59, having got a far better start than polesitter Tim Harvey in his Van Diemen, but he had to make do with third and Class B honours.

Championship leader Morris spent much of the race attempting to out-slipstream Hadfield then Harrison. He did lead for a while in the last half of the race but was not able to make a move on Harrison stick, despite setting a fastest lap.

Neither Harvey nor Mark Armstrong (Van Diemen RF80) got great starts, although Harvey kept in touch with the leading group and duelled with Hadfield at Redgate at one point. Armstrong was fifth after a steady and considered race.

Second in Class B was Stuart Kestenbaum (Crossle 16F), who finished ninth. He started 15th, having had an off in qualifying and only managing three laps.

The safety car was scrambled on lap two after Simon Clews’s Royale and Paul Britten’s PRS had to be retrieved from the gravel at Coppice. Matthew Wrigley also had to retire and George Ditchfield’s Van Diemen returned to the pits with a crushed nosecone, leaking fluid. The incidents are believed to be related.

Castle Combe winner Ben Tinkler’s Van Diemen suffered a mystery fault and he also had to retire, although he did attempt to rejoin the race before returning to the pits.
