Tim Harvey snatched pole position at the last possible moment from Simon Hadfield in a rain-hit qualifying session for the Classic FF1600 at Donington Park .
Harvey pipped Hadfield, who had led for most of the session in his BRSCC Northern FF1600 race-winning Lotus 59, by a tiny margin.
A soaking wet track proved a challenging obstacle for Classic FF1600 drivers throughout the session at Donington.
2018 Class A champion Mark Armstrong was third in his Van Diemen, ahead of guest driver Simon Jackson’s Javelin.
Championship challengers Rick Morris (Royale RP29) and Ben Tinkler (Van Diemen RF80) could not quite master the waterlogged asphalt and will start fifth and seventh, separated by Matthew Wrigley’s Class B Merlyn.
The session was interrupted by a safety car period, brought out by Stuart Kestenbaum’s Class B Crossle having an excursion into the gravel at Mcleans.
Kestenbaum was able to restart and qualified in 15th place. Not long before the chequered flag, Stephen Mawhinney caught the same slippery patch that had caught out Kestenbaum.
The rain appears to be subsiding, so the two races tomorrow may be a completely different story.
