Fitness gains key to Jonathan Browne’s breakthrough National victory

Cliff Dempsey Racing boss Cliff Dempsey has credited fitness gains made over the winter for Jonathan Browne’s race-winning performance for his team at Oulton Park last weekend.

Browne scored a best result of 10th during his first full BRSCC Avon Tyres National FF1600 season last year, and showed signs of promise during this season’s Snetterton season opener, where he felt he had the pace to be on the podium after two top-six finishes.

The Irishman claimed his first pole during the second round at Oulton, which he then converted into his first win, fending off Team Dolan’s Ross Martin for most of the race. He followed that up with second behind Martin in race two.

“We’ve had a great weekend,” CDR team boss Cliff Dempsey told FF1600website, whose other two drivers James Clarke and Spike Kohlbecker also took a podium each.

“Jonathan knew this year he should be better but we didn’t expect him to be quite as good as he is at the moment”.

Dempsey put Browne’s upturn in form down to his work during the off-season on improving his fitness:

“He’s looking like a seasoned racer and I’m very, very impressed with him because I know he did all the things I asked of him in the winter, which is: he had to work on his fitness, he had to get some weight down.

“The credit goes to him because he’s committed to it, he’s proven to us that he’s committed to it, and the results are showing.

“I’m over the moon with Jonathan. He was 85kg last year, he’s 75kg now and that’s what he did in the winter because he wanted to race and be competitive”.

After his win, Browne said that it had been a great day but it had been difficult to keep Martin behind in race one.

“It’s a lot to take in. It was really tough, I just couldn’t break the tow. I just managed to hit my brake points and not make a mistake to get the win.”

Browne is not competing at the next National round at Anglesey as he is taking exams, but is aiming for more wins on his return..

“This year I have more experience in the car, plus I’ve lost a lot of weight so, a lot fitter now.

“I’m looking forward, hopefully we can get a few more wins this year.”
