Martin on Snetterton National FF1600 pole as rookies impress

Ross Martin took pole position for the season-opening Avon Tyres BRSCC National FF1600 race at Snetterton, while rookies Spike Kohlbecker and reigning Formula 1 Esports champion Brendon Leigh impressed on their debuts.

After leading practice earlier in the day, Martin continued to show strong pace in his Team Dolan-run Van Diemen. He secured pole for race one of the opening weekend with a 2m01.792s, beating Cliff Dempsey Racing’s Spike Kohlbecker by just 0.034s.

Kohlbecker, who is racing in the championship for the first time after stints in both New Zealand and Canada’s Formula 1600 series, was one of the main surprises of the qualifying session, securing second place ahead of more experienced team-mate James Clarke.

Clarke had an anonymous practice session but rebounded with a 2m01.937s in qualifying, good enough for third.

Neil Maclennan saved his fastest time until late on in the session, the Kevin Mills Racing driver pipping his rookie teammate Leigh in the last five minutes.

Leigh continued to impress after going fourth-fastest in practice, setting a lap good enough to start from fifth on his single-seater debut.

Rory Smith began to climb the timing sheets with five minutes remaining but had a time good enough for fourth disallowed. An earlier lap was also black-and-white flagged, so had to fall back on an earlier 2m02.005s that left him seventh.

Max Marzorati was the fastest driver from the Clubman class in ninth, beating next best placed Clubman driver John Svensson by 1.6 seconds.

Scott Huntley had qualified 17th but will be sent to the back of the grid for race one, with his Van Diemen found to be underweight.
