Brendon Leigh has been demoted to 10th place on his Avon Tyres BRSCC National Formula Ford 1600 debut, receiving a time penalty for contact with Cliff Dempsey Racing’s Jonathan Browne.
Reigning double Formula 1 Esports champion Leigh is competing in his first ever single-seater race meeting at the BRSCC National FF1600 season opener and had finished in fourth place in the first race at Snetterton.
But post-race, Leigh was handed a 15.5s time penalty by race officials for “driving in a manner incompatible with general safety” in his duel with Browne, slotting him in directly behind ninth-placed Browne in the final race result.
The pair came to blows with two laps remaining while fighting over fourth place, until the Kevin Mills Racing driver ran into Browne at the Wilson hairpin, sending the latter down the order.
Browne said the spin was a “gut-wrenching” moment, having been in contention for a maiden National FF1600 podium for much of the race.
“I got turned around at the first hairpin,” Browne told FF1600website.
“It’s a bit gut-wrenching. I was P4 but (finishing) P9, which isn’t terrible, but from P4 it’s not great.”
Leigh had put in an impressive debut up to his altercation with Browne, qualifying fifth for the first race and finishing fourth on-track ahead of both his KMR teammates, Neil Maclennan and Michael Macpherson.
