Young Racing Driver Academy member Abbie Munro will make her single-seater racing debut this weekend at the 2019 Champion of Brands season-opener at Donington Park.
The 17-year-old from Scotland will race at Donington for the experienced Oldfield Motorsport team, with which Josh Smith won the 2018 Formula Ford Festival.
Oldfield also ran fellow YRDA driver Tommy Foster in three rounds of the BRSCC Avon Tyres National FF1600 last season, who also scored a win, pole and fastest lap during the Anglesey Winter meeting last November.
Munro plans to take part in a mix of National, Northern and Champion of Brands rounds this year with the Oldfield team.
Munro has several years of karting under her belt and gained her first experience of single-seaters in April last year by testing a British Formula 4 car for Arden Motorsport, first at a two-day test at Angelsey then getting more mileage in the car at Croft in July.
She also has spent time in the Arden simulator to prepare for Sunday’s event.
“She was very smooth, consistent and quick today – and not only for the first day in a Formula Ford,” team boss James Oldfield told FF1600website of Munro’s performance in testing yesterday.
“It’s a competitive grid for Sunday, which should offer perfect experience and practice for her, which is her aim. After day one, I highly rate her as a driver.”
“James and his team have a lot of experience and knowledge and I can’t wait to learn from all of them as I make my first steps into the world of single-seater racing,” added Munro.
An entry list of 23 cars has been confirmed for this Sunday’s Champion of Brands season-opening ‘away day’ at Donington.
As well as Munro, the grid includes reigning Combe FF1600 champion Luke Cooper in his family-run Swift, Ollie White in his Medina and two-time Combe FF1600 champion Adam Higgins driving a Firman.
2018 National and Northern FF1600 race-winner Rory Smith will sprint across from Oulton Park, where the Northern season opener is taking place the day before, to race his Medina JL18.
B-M Racing rookie Nicole Woods will join her team-mate in doing Northern and Champion of Brands double duty, in what will be only her second FF1600 race meeting.
