Gronkowski storms to Scottish FF1600 pole as GBR drivers struggle

Jordan Gronkowski scored the maiden pole position of the 2019 Scottish Formula Ford season by nearly a second, though all four Graham Brunton Racing cars were surprisingly the slowest qualifiers.

Gronkowski found a good set-up in testing yesterday and it showed, as he set consistently quick lap-times in his Van Diemen.

Scottish FF1600 returnee Jamie Thorburn, whose family-run Border Reivers is making its FF1600 debut this weekend, will start from second on the grid, posting a lap just under a second shy of Gronkowski’s effort.

Fellow Scottish FF1600 returnee Kenneth Cowie put in an impressive performance in the tricky conditions to line up third in his Mygale.

His lap time of 1m02.326s was one and a half seconds from pole but over half a second ahead of of Neil Broome’s, who qualified fourth.

Matthew Chisholm slotted his Van Diemen into fifth on the grid for race one ahead of the best-placed GBR driver, Kyle Reid, who had an eventful session.

Reid was faster than all of his team-mates but lost the rear of his Ray at Clark’s, spinning off into the barriers and pitting with damage.

Cameron Thomson was seventh quickest and, like his GBR team-mate Reid, spun at Clark’s, though avoided the barriers.

He lines up ahead of his other two team-mates Logan Hannah and Steven Barlow, who complete the nine car grid.

Race one is scheduled to get underway at 13:15.
