Jordan Gronkowski took a dominant win in a wet opening round of the 2019 Scottish Formula Ford season.
Starting from pole position, Gronkowski was unchallenged at the start as SMRC returnee Jamie Thorburn slotted in behind him to hold second. Kenneth Cowie held station in third.
Gronkowski had quickly established a lead, posting fastest lap after fastest lap. Border Reivers rival Thorburn had no answer for Gronkowski’s turn of pace as he began to pull away out front.
In the end Gronkowski crossed the line 8.5 seconds ahead of Thorburn, the only man able to set a lap under the minute mark.
Cowie finished third but was in no man’s land. He came home 14 seconds behind Thorburn and 10 seconds ahead of the quintet behind him.
Matthew Chisholm had launched his Van Diemen into fourth off the line, but immediately lost that place to Neil Broome who retook the position on the inside of McIntyre’s.
FF1600 newcomer Kyle Reid got away well, swiftly fighting his way from sixth to fourth and past the battling Chisholm and Broome on the opening lap. But his challenge faded later in the race, as Reid slipped back on the start/finish straight on lap eight due to a “loss of power.”
Reid’s Graham Bruton Racing team-mate Cameron Thomson had passed Neil Broome to hold fifth place after five of the 12 laps, but Chisholm, Logan Hannah and Steve Barlow were all within striking distance.
Broome looked quicker and waited until lap six to make his move, taking Thomson on the inside of the hairpin.
Hannah then came alive as the laps counted down, passing team-mate Barlow for eighth place in McIntyre’s.
Despite all five cars running closely together, there would be no more change of position as Broome sealed fourth from Thomson, Chisholm, Hannah and Barlow.
Reid continued on after his temporary loss of power to finish in ninth.
