Rick Morris wins Classic season opener at Silverstone

Rick Morris won the opening race of the BARC Luna Logistics Classic Formula Ford season on Silverstone’s International layout, although his rivals did not make it easy for him.

Morris had a healthy lead by the time the chequered flag fell, but had to battle hard prior.

Jordan Harrison got an excellent start from second and inched ahead of Morris, his lead surviving a short safety car period that ensued from spins by Simon Clews and Michael Saunders.

Royale driver Morris and sole Lola pilot Harrison traded the lead for several laps, despite Harrison suffering from blatant gear selection problems. He was eventually caught by Mark Armstrong in his Van Diemen RF80, but did not give up until he had to pull off at the side of The Loop.

Armstrong inherited a relatively safe second place and was only really bothered by backmarkers, but the battle behind him for third was fierce.

John Village prevailed after a series of muscular scraps with first Armstrong, then Stuart Kestenbaum and finally Tim Harvey. BTCC commentator Harvey got within two-tenths of a second of former single-seater team boss Village, but could not quite pip him at the line.

Harvey hadn’t made a great start but methodically picked his way back to fourth in his Van Diemen. He survived repeated attacks from behind by Kevin Mansell who was fifth, who finished just ahead of Tom Brown.

Brown’s Van Diemen, hastily built from a spare chassis and parts from the wrecked ‘Jesus Saves’ car, was only finished late on Saturday evening.

Adrian Reynard had won the B class for older cars in a machine of his own design by finishing seventh, but was later disqualified for a technical infringement.

Reynard’s exclusion moved Kestenbaum, who spun his Van Diemen while attacking Village for fourth, up a place after the flag, while the PRS cars of Paul Britten, Colin Williams and Oliver Chapman rounded out the top ten.

Harrison’s father, Mark, is due to drive their Lola in the second race but it is unclear whether the car will be ready in time for the start.
