Michael Eastwell claimed pole for the first TetraBoost Champion of Brands race, edging his Kevin Mills Racing team-mate Neil Maclennan in a session-long duel.
Eastwell, who enters this weekend as the reigning champion having won both of the series’ August races, set the pace in the opening minutes of the session.
Maclennan briefly grabbed provisional pole halfway through the session. While Eastwell was able to wrestle top spot away almost instantaneously, the two swapped positions again within the final minute of the session.
Eastwell’s 1m00.187s benchmark sealed pole by a slender 0.050 seconds over Maclennan.
The poleman did suffer an off-track excursion with five minutes of the session remaining. On a greasy track surface, Eastwell lost control at Surtees and slid onto the grass on the outside.
The KMR driver joined Innes Hickman as a spinner. Hickman’s session ended in the Clearways gravel trap after he spun within the first two minutes of the green flag, triggering a safety car. He had not set a representative time.
Scottish Formula Ford regular Michael Macpherson completed a KMR top three lockout. He edged closer to his team-mates as the session progressed, but did not figure in the battle for pole, ending up 0.496s adrift of Eastwell.
In only his second Formula Ford qualifying session, 16-year-old Young Racing Driver Academy member Tommy Foster finished fourth.
Kevin Bottomley and Jack Kemp contested fifth spot, with the two exchanging positions late in the session. Bottomley briefly slipped behind, but demoted Kemp back to sixth with his penultimate lap.
