Callum Grant dominates Janet Cesar Trophy

Callum Grant took a dominant victory in the Janet Cesar Trophy race for 1982-’98 Formula Fords at Silverstone’s Walter Hayes Trophy.

On a wet track following a heavy rain shower, Grant made a good start from pole in his Van Diemen to lead closest challenger Richard Tarling into Copse.

However, contact with another car resulted in a spin for Tarling, dropping to the back of the field and intimating a charge back through the field for the Jamun driver.

He was already back into the top five by lap seven, and then passed Chris Hodgen’s Van Diemen RF89 to secure that position.

Next up were the battling Nicolas Beloou (Van Diemen FR91) and Oulton Park regular Jaap Blijleven in his Reynard 88FF, up from seventh on the grid.

It didn’t take Tarling long to demote that pair, doing so by lap eight, and then he set about getting past Doug Crosbie’s Van Diemen RF89.

He did so by lap eight, but it was too late to try and catch the flying Grant with only three laps remaining, consigning Tarling to second.

Grant had over 12 seconds in hand after the 12 laps of Silverstone’s National circuit, which began to dry as the race went on.

Crosbie held on to third, but by just 0.4s ahead of Blijleven, who in turn had pulled away slightly from Beloou in their battle.

Stephane Lemeret bounced back from trouble in the second semi final to finish sixth in his Van Diemen RF92, having started down in 18th. He was just half a second ahead of Hodgen at the flag, followed by Sam Street, Tom Brown and Andrew Higginbottom.
