Julian Van der Watt secured victory in the third heat of the Walter Hayes Trophy after a race-long battle with Tom McArthur and Ross Martin.
BM Racing’s McArthur started from pole and finished just over half a second behind Van der Watt’s Spectrum, with the Graham Brunton Racing Ray of Ross Martin third.
McArthur, in a Van Diemen, held the lead through lap two before Van der Watt tried a move around the outside of Brooklands on the third lap.
It was not a successful move but set the tone for the rest of the race.
Van der Watt (Spectrum) took the lead halfway through the race with Martin leading McArthur down the Wellington Straight.
Van der Watt came under pressure towards the end of the race with McArthur trying to pressurise the South African into a mistake.
Martin finished third behind McArthur with Carter Williams (Ray) and Henry Chart (Van Diemen) claiming fourth and fifth.
Williams briefly got up to third with a move on Martin around the outside of Luffield on the penultimate lap although the Scotsman was able to re-take the place on the final lap.
Thomas Cappezone (Swift) was sixth ahead of Team JRT Marly’s John Svensson (Van Diemen), Jaap Blijleven (Reynard) and Adam Quartermaine (Van Diemen) to round out the top nine – who automatically qualify for the semi-finals.
