Moyers cruises to comfortable Heat 4 race win

Defending Walter Hayes Trophy winner Michael Moyers eased to Heat 4 race victory in his Spectrum, ahead of a tight battle for second place between Ivor McCullough and Stuart Gough.

Kevin Mills Racing’s Moyers led all the way from pole to win by 5.3 seconds. And while Gough of Oldfield Motorsport ran Moyers close in qualifying come the race he instead found himself under attack from McCullough’s fellow Van Diemen.

McCullough – who had changed his engine overnight after losing oil pressure in testing, and had further misfire problems in qualifying – took second from Gough on the penultimate lap, which he kept until the end.

Gough said he struggled for pace at important corners such as Copse, and picked up a track limits warning early on.

Ed Thurston took fourth place in his 1971 Merlyn Mk20A, finishing 16.7s off Moyers, and was 3.1s clear of a close fight for fifth headed by Neil Tofts ahead of Nigel Dolan – both in Van Diemens.

Adam Fathers finished seventh in his Ray while George McDonald’s MS Race Engineering Van Diemen took the final automatic qualification spot for tomorrow’s semi-final stage in eighth place.
