Defending Walter Hayes Trophy winner Michael Moyers took a comfortable Heat 4 pole position for Kevin Mills Racing, ahead of Oldfield Motorsport’s Stuart Gough.
Moyers led virtually the entire session in his Spectrum, though closest pursuer Gough in his Van Diemen was able to progressively chip away at his advantage.
By the end Gough was still just under three tenths shy of Moyers’ 1m02.234 best, to take second on the Heat 4 grid.
Ivor McCullough was third fastest in his Van Diemen, seventh tenths off the pole time, and was followed by Nigel Dolan’s Van Diemen in fourth, who was 1.6 seconds shy of Moyers’ pole time.
18-year-old Ed Thurston put his Historic class 1971 Merlyn Mk20A fifth fastest, 1.7s off the pole. It was Thurston’s first competition run in the car, having previously raced an Elden in Historic Formula Ford.
Neil Tofts was a tenth shy of Thurston in sixth, while fellow Van Diemen runner Flashman Finneran was seventh fastest, 2.1s off Moyers.
Fergus Paton in his B-M Racing Van Diemen was eighth, ending in a dead heat with Adam Fathers with both setting a 1m04.832s. Fathers had to settle for ninth as the second of the pair to set their fastest lap, with George McDonald completing the top 10.
