Tilley pips Scott Mansell at the line to complete Classics Brands sweep

Benn Tilley, Scott Mansell, Rick Morris – Classic Formula Ford – 2018 – Brands Hatch

Benn Tilley climbed back up the field from a poor start to win the second Luna Logistics Classic Formula Ford race of the weekend, pipping Scott Mansell by 0.022s.

Saturday race winner Tilley bogged down in his Merlyn MK20A off the line, dropping down to fifth position. Fellow front-row starter Scott Mansell took the lead from veteran Rick Morris from the start.

From then, Tilley worked his way back through the field, with Class A champion Mark Armstrong being the first victim.

Stuart Kestenbaum was running in third before Tilley got past on the third of 15 laps. Armstrong followed him through, relegating Kestenbaum to fifth.

Tilley then worked his way past Morris, making the crucial move at Druids. From then, Tilley fought with leader Mansell, before the safety car made an appearance at the halfway point for a spin by Simon Clews.

After the restart, Tilley was immediately pressuring Mansell, passing for the lead one lap later.

From then, Tilley was unable to pull out a gap as Mansell got back past while the pair lapped Ben Hadfield.

Tilley, who had consistently lapped quicker than Mansell, tried frenetically to get past right up until the line. It was only significantly better traction coming onto the pit straight that helped Tilley to edge past for another photo finish.

Morris rounded out the podium for the veteran’s second podium of the weekend, ahead of Armstrong and Kestenbaum.

Further back, Kevin Mansell headed the next pack of cars, narrowly edging Nicholas Gibson.

Ian Jeary was on course to finish in eighth, before pulling off into the pits shortly after the safety car period.
