Martin secures second Scottish title with race one victory

Ross Martin mathematically clinched a second consecutive Scottish Formula Ford title with victory in the championship’s penultimate round, mastering a drenched Knockhill to win by 12.212 seconds from Ciaran Haggerty.

A sudden rainstorm lashed Knockhill just as cars formed on the grid, delaying the start by around 15 minutes. This led to a safety car race start, with Martin timing his getaway from pole perfectly and dropping fellow front row man Jordan Gronkowski.

Gronkowski’s slow start left him vulnerable to Ciaran Haggerty behind, the 2014 champion sending his Mygale down the inside at the hairpin to take second moments after the green flag flew.

Martin was unchallenged for the remaining 12 laps, the Graham Brunton Racing driver increasing his lead by an average of a second per lap over championship returnee Haggerty.

Gary Sykes scored his best ever result by finishing third, taking advantage of a mistake by Gronkowski. Trying to keep pace with Haggerty ahead, Gronkowski went off at Clark’s at the halfway mark, dropping to sixth.

As Sykes resisted pressure from Neil Broome, Gronkowski sent his Van Diemen down the inside of Ross Howe at the hairpin for fifth soon after his mistake.

Third, fourth and fifth would then be settled due to a mistake in the closing stages by Broome, dropping him to fifth, promoting Gronkowski to fourth, and relieving Sykes of pressure to retain his first ever podium finish.

Sebastian Melrose finished sixth, recovering from the rear of the field after running wide through the grass heading to Clark’s. With the circuit run in reverse direction, this spat him back out onto the corner’s exit, unable to gather up his Ray and spinning around.

His recovery drive included a two-in-one pass on Steven Barlow and Matthew Chisholm at the hairpin, while also demoting Ross Howe to seventh in the closing moments.

Despite being glued to his gearbox throughout, Chisholm was unable to find a way past Barlow for eighth place, leaving him the last finisher in ninth.
