Martin wins shortened SMRC race two after Melrose and Smith collide

Ross Martin scored victory in the second Scottish FF1600 meeting race, which was shortened by one lap after a crash involving Graham Brunton Racing pair Sebastian Melrose and Josh Smith.

Martin led away from pole but was immediately under pressure from Gronkowski. A strong run out of Clark’s gave Gronkowski the lead under braking for the Hairpin..

It was a short lived lead for Gronkowski, as a fantastic exit from McIntyre’s two laps later allowed Martin to slingshot past Gronkowski through Butcher’s to retake the lead in a spectacular move.

Gronkowski was then demoted to fourth by Melrose and Smith, though he would shortly inherit second place back once more.

Smith had scythed his way through the field from last on the grid, after a rotor round failure forced him out of the first race.

Having picked his way through the midfield and then flying past Gronkowski on the start-finish straight, Smith lined up Melrose after a strong exit from the hairpin on his outside.

Squeezed to the edge of the track, Smith interlocked wheels with Melrose, putting Smith’s car into the air and collecting Melrose. Smith retired on the spot, while Melrose limped around to pit lane, his car crabbing heavily.

This promoted James Clarke to a surprise podium finish, his first in Scottish FF1600. A last lap pass on Gary Sykes secured his third place, having spent most of the race behind him in sixth place.

Sykes scored his best finish of 2018 with fourth, ahead of Matthew Chisholm in fifth, who fell backwards after a poor getaway from his fourth place grid slot.

Ross Howe had been battling both Clarke and Chisholm for position, at one point early on ahead of both. He was passed around the half-way mark by a recovering Clarke, and then succumbed to the slow-starting Chisholm in the closing stages.

Steven Barlow hovered behind the four-way battle between Clarke, Sykes, Chisholm and Howe throughout but fell back in the closing laps, finishing seventh. Fraser Gray improved on his race one performance, finishing on the lead lap in eighth.
