Murray moves into double figures in opening Oulton Park BRSCC National race

Niall Murray took his 10th win of the BRSCC Avon Tyres National FF1600 season at Oulton Park in one of his most dominant performances yet.

The Irishman broke the tow from pole on the first lap, and from then was unseen as he romped to a 8.1 second victory in his Van Diemen RF99.

Second place was defended staunchly by Swift Cooper’s Luke Cooper at the start of the race, but could not break the tow and was eventually overtaken by Kevin Mills Racing’s Michael Eastwell.

Eastwell had no such issue, and eked out a gap that meant he was safe in second place in the latter part of the race.

After starting fifth and initially dropping to sixth, Murray’s Team Dolan team-mate Matt Round-Garrido ended up completing the podium in third.

He was beaten off the line by championship returnee Luke Williams, and it took him a lap before he was back through. The battle for second hadn’t broken away, and Round-Garrido swiftly moved past Cliff Dempsey Racing’s Jamie Thorburn.

Getting past Cooper was far more difficult, and Round-Garrido hounded the Swift SC16 driver for several laps before finally getting through at Turn 1 on the last lap.

Cooper almost succumbed to Thorburn’s attacks later in the lap, but still secured fourth.

Don Hardman Racing’s Joey Foster beat Thorburn’s team-mate Nico Gruber to sixth, both benefitting from a crash between Luke and Carter Williams.

On the fourth lap of the race DHR driver Carter lined up a move on KMR’s Luke at Hislops, but misjudged his braking point and rearended the reigning champion. Both managed to keep going, but ended up at the back of the field, with Carter eventually opting to retire. Luke Williams recovered to 12th.

Team Dolan’s Jack Wolfenden finished his first race since his switch from Firman to Van Diemen in eighth, while Rory Smith just won the battle for ninth with B-M Racing team-mate Sebastian Job.

Vincent Jay took an easy win in the Clubman Post-’89 class, with rival George McDonald pulling in on the final lap and failing to finish.
