Robinson stars but Round-Garrido keeps Northern Ireland lead

Matt Round-Garrido retained the lead of the Northern Ireland Formula Ford 1600 Championship after the fourth meeting of the season, although it was Noel Robinson who was the star of the weekend.

Robinson’s first appearance of the season has put the Van Diemen driver straight into seventh in the standings, having taken both poles, a second and a win across the two races.

Championship leader Round-Garrido could only manage two third places for Team Dolan in his Medina, while doubling up in the BRSCC Avon Tyres National FF1600 Championship.

He briefly ran in second in the first race, and spent most of the second in an intense battle with title rival Alan Davidson, who was also contesting both sets of races.

“Not the greatest of weekends, to be honest,” Round-Garrido said.

“My main championship rival Davidson, he’s a really fast driver. He proved that both in the National and the Northern Irish championships this weekend.

“He won the first [NIR] race, then in the second race he came fourth behind me.”

The six extra points gained by Davidson brings the gap between the pair down to 35 points, with Round-Garrido having won four races this season compared to two for Davidson in his Pre-’90 Mondiale.

“David McCullough was unfortunate not to get a win this weekend, I thought,” Round-Garrido added.

McCullough led the standings after the first double-header, but had dropped to third having missed the previous event last month.

He qualified second on his return, and was leading the opening race until the penultimate lap when his Van Diemen came to a halt.

In the second race he hassled winner Robinson constantly, finishing the 16 lap encounter just 0.114 seconds behind.

Two top five finishes for Will Herron lifted him from sixth to fourth in the standings, with the absent Mike Todd and Van Diemen driver Andrew Blair being demoted. The trio are covered by just four points, with the next two rounds taking place at the end of July.
