Ben Mitchell leads close HSCC qualifying at Silverstone

Ben Mitchell came out on top of a close qualifying battle for the first HSCC Historic Formula Ford 1600 race at Silverstone, in which over 40 cars took part.

Merlyn Mk20 driver Mitchell grabbed pole by a third of a second from Cameron Jackson in his Lola T200, who in turn was just over a tenth faster than Callum Grant, in another Merlyn.

Maxim Bartell and Ed Thurston were a little further behind, with the top five being covered by 1.009 seconds.

The 40-car field ws lacking in reigning champion Richard Tarling, whose Jamun T2 still has problems after the previous round at Thruxton. Benn Simms’s Jomo is also missing from the grid.

Mitchell will be looking to increase his lead at the top of the points table, but Jackson is only 11 points behind and looked very confident on track. Thurston cannot be discounted either, having put in one of his strongest qualifying performances of 2018.

Brian Morris is the leading Radio Caroline Over 50 Championship driver in eighth place.

Among the guest drivers this weekend is Robs Lamplough in a Winkelmann WDF2-45. Lamplough made four Formula One starts (in non-championship races) between 1967 and 1971.
