David McArthur took his second BRSCC Avon Tyres Northern Formula Ford 1600 Championship win of the season at Oulton Park, overcoming race one winner Rory Smith in a fantastic duel.
As in race one, McArthur made a slow start in his Van Diemen LA10, dropping to third position behind Jack Wolfenden’s Pre90 car.
The B-M Racing driver was back into second position by half-way around the opening lap, and set about chasing down team-mate Smith.
A 2.4s lead from the end of the first lap was reduced to just a few thousandths of a second on lap five thanks to a string of fastest laps by McArthur.
McArthur repeated the manoeuvre that gave him his shortlived race one lead, passing Smith around the outside at Old Hall at the beginning of lap six, but this time Smith fought back, reclaiming the place at Hislop’s chicane on lap eight. McArthur struck back on the following lap, making a decisive move on the Shell Oils loop.
Wolfenden was one of two drivers – the other being David’s father Neil, who subsequently retired – to be hit with a ten second penalty for jumping the start. In spite of that, the Reynard 88FF took the Pre90 honours as a result of being able to reel out a large enough advantage over Jaap Blijleven’s Reynard; the Dutch driver losing out in a scrap for fourth overall with Nigel Dolan’s Post-’89 Van Diemen JL12.
Matt Chisholm took his Van Diemen RF00 to sixth position, with Pre87 class winner Mario Sarchet’s UCLan-run Reynard 86FF claiming seventh overall from Scott Guthrie’s leading class E car, the Crossle 25F, on the final lap.
