Mitchell pips Jackson to second win at Thruxton

Ben Mitchell claimed a second Ian Taylor Trophy win in the HSCC Historic Formula Ford Championship at Thruxton, despite a late challenge from Cameron Jackson.

Mitchell started from pole after winning the opening race of the weekend but was immedietly forced to defend from fellow front row starter Maxim Bartell.

Jackson, Ed Thurston and Richard Tarling made it a five way battle for the lead, building a gap to Tiff Needell in P6 as they swapped positions.

The five ran nose to tail through most of the first half of the race. Jackson briefly managed to put some breathing room between himself and the rest of the battle as Bartell and Tarling fought with Mitchell, but the gap was quickly closed and Tarling wasted no time in reclaiming the lead.

In the second half of the race, Tarling, Mitchell, and Jackson began to break away from Bartell and Thurston. Tarling dropped to the backwards in the closing laps, leaving Mitchell and Jackson to sprint to the chequered flag.

The pair swapped places twice on the final lap, running side by side on the start finish straight, with Jackson’s Lola just 0.147s behind Mitchell’s Merlyn.

Bartell picked up third place, ahead of Tarling and Thurston in fourth and fifth respectively.

Callum Grant, who was forced to start form the pit lane after discovering a bolt was missing from his Merlyn while in grid position, managed to climb up through the field to take sixth, ahead of Ben Tusting and Needell.

Sam Mitchell was another driver climbing up throgh the field, having to start from the back of the grid after a mechanical failure in race one. Mitchell had managed to break into the top 10 before he span in the closing stages of the race, dropping back to 16th. He managed to recover to P14 before the chequered flag.

Rob Smith and Chris Stuart rounded out the top 10.

    Hi…. Results panel.. Benn Tilley was winning this weekend but not in this race! (He was in Classic at Donington) It was Ben Mitchell at Thruxton.
