Simon Hadfield beats Scott Mansell to Classic FF1600 victory at Silverstone

Simon Hadfield won the first BARC Luna Logistics Classic Formula Ford race of the day on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit’s final straight by the tiniest of margins.

The Titan driver beat Scott Mansell by 0.022 seconds.

Hadfield and Mansell had been tussling for the lead for the last third of the race and Mansell had only sneaked ahead of Hadfield seconds earlier, at Brooklands, before Hadfield’s winning move.

Benn Tilley, who won last time out at Silverstone on the National circuit, moved into third place, passing Mark Armstrong’s Van Diemen. Hadfield’s win was the second this season for a class B car and Tilley also flew the flag for pre-72 cars. His class fastest lap was only 0.7s slower than Armstrong’s class A fastest lap.

Mike Gardner led for much of the race but slipped down to sixth on the last lap. He had fought with Hadfield and Mansell throughout the race and was also involved in a battle with James Hadfield, son of Simon, who was driving a striking matt-black Hawke. Hadfield junior qualified second but spun off at Brooklands early on. He did manage to rejoin and made his was back to seventh place.

Polesitter Adriano Medeiros was not so lucky. The defending champion was making a one-off appearance in his Jesus Saves Van Diemen replica, but his challenge was over on the first lap.

The silencer from his car’s exhaust came off, causing so much noise that Medeiros thought that the engine was badly damaged. He pulled off and into the pits as the vibrations were a genuine threat to the engine’s integrity.

Ben Tinkler, in another Van Diemen RF80, was also out of luck. He had been in among the leading group for most of the race and even led a few times, but he was forced out on the penultimate lap by a suspension collapse. His sequence of passes against Simon Hadfield at Brooklands was one of the most impressive of the race.

Jordan Harrison ended the race fourth, having passed Armstrong. He had hitched onto the back of the leading group at about two-thirds distance and kept his nerve to the end.
