BRDC British Formula 3 youngster Joshua Mason is eyeing further Classic Formula Ford 1600 outings after competing in the British Automobile Racing Club’s Classic Formula Ford 1600 opener at Silverstone last weekend.
The Uckfield-based driver ran a Van Diemen RF79 prepared by veteran Mike Gardner’s GT Motorsport team during the qualifying and two races at Silverstone on Sunday, as part of a bid to gain race licence signatures ahead of a British F3 campaign with Lanan Racing.
Mason drove in two races at Oulton Park on Saturday in the Pre ’90 Formula Ford 1600 Northern Championship before making the journey to Silverstone, and also has two more outings prepared in the car at Castle Combe.
“I like it a lot,” Mason said of the FF1600 racing. “[At Oulton Park] we were two seconds off second place and I wasn’t really pushing.
“Once I have got my six signatures I might come back just for car control experience because it’s just a massive go-kart for me.
“In between F3 rounds, I will probably join in this and do some more races with Mike.”
Mason qualified in 14th for the first race and finished 14th and 11th in the two races.
