Kirkistown completes 2018 National calendar

The 2018 National Formula Ford 1600 calendar has been provisionally completed with the addition of a Kirkistown round alongside the seven events on the TCR UK package.

The majority of next year’s schedule was revealed when the TCR deal was announced in September, but with the door left open for an eighth round.

After the huge popularity of the 2017 Kirkistown round, a return to Northern Ireland was top of most teams and drivers’ wishlists for the additional date and it was confirmed with the release of a provisional schedule on Monday night.

The Kirkistown event again takes place in late June, running on Friday June 23 and Saturday June 24.

Next year’s National championship opens at Silverstone alongside TCR on Easter weekend, and also includes Knockhill, Brands Hatch, Castle Combe, Oulton Park, Croft and Donington Park. Croft replacing Anglesey is the only change to the line-up from the 2017 list.

The Triple Crown mini-series focused on the championship’s three venues with Formula 1 pedigree (Silverstone, Brands, Donington) and the Tourist Trophy contest for the further-flung events (Knockhill, Kirkistown and Croft) continue for 2018.

Mallory and Silverstone join Northern schedule

The provisional Northern Championship schedule includes the return of BRSCC FF1600 racing to Mallory Park after a long absence.

Mallory was an FF1600 stronghold in the category’s original heyday, with the Star of Mallory series among the most fiercely contested of the single-circuit championships.

It was eventually absorbed into the Star of the Midlands series, but since that was discontinued the main FF1600 action at the Leicestershire track has been via James Beckett’s initial revival of the Star of Mallory as a one-off race and its subsequent continuation within the Super Series, which has attracted mixed grids.

The BRSCC Northern Championship will visit Mallory on September 2 next year.

The other change to the Northern schedule for 2018 is the addition of a standalone race at Silverstone without the National series at the end of June.

In its previous summer date, the National championship’s Silverstone round had traditionally attracted a bumper entry as guest drivers appeared for early practice ahead of the Walter Hayes Trophy. The National Silverstone event’s move to Easter potentially leaves a void on that front that the June Northern date could fill.

The rest of the Northern schedule comprises three Oulton Park races and two Anglesey visits, with the November Anglesey meeting running for the Star of Anglesey series only.
