Chris Middlehurst took pole position for heat two of the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch by less than a hundredth of a second in a session disrupted by wet weather.
Middlehurst recorded a 51.119s in his Van Diemen, which was enough to top the times ahead of Jamie Thorburn (Ray) and Michael Eastwell (Spectrum).
The session was effectively over with seven minutes remaining on the clock when it started raining during the session. The top three were separated by less than a tenth with all drivers taking advantage of the drying conditions before the rain returned.
2013 Formula Renault BARC champion Middlehurst and Scottish driver Thorburn matched each other throughout the first half of the session as the times tumbled.
Most drivers headed to the pit lane once the conditions changed and there were no improvements in the closing stages, leaving Noel Robinson fourth, Festival returnee Darren Burke fifth and James Roe Jr sixth in their Van Diemens.
