Matt Cowley booked his place in the Formula Ford Festival semi-finals with victory in the third heat as pole-sitter Jake Byrne crashed out of the lead.
Cowley started second in his Van Diemen, behind Byrne, and was running within a second of him for most of the race.
But in the second half of the race Cowley had closed the gap and started to apply pressure to the leader, with Matt Round-Garrido in a Medina and Luke Cooper in his Swift making it a four-car battle for the lead. With three laps to go, the pressure told and Byrne crashed into the wall at Clearways, his moment having started at Surtees.
Cowley took the lead and held on from Round-Garrido and Cooper, who completed the top three.
Rory Smith finished fourth in his Van Diemen with Sebastian Melrose (Ray) just behind in fifth.
Oliver White fought his way through the field to take a magnificent sixth place having started from last place and with a 10-second delay, following his exclusion from qualifying.
Team USA Scholarship driver Aaron Jeansonne had been in contention for a top six slot until a late spin at Graham Hill Bend dropped him out of the top ten.
Michael McPherson finished in seventh place despite receiving a five second time penalty for not respecting track limits, ahead of Pre-1990 winner Conor Murphy (Mondiale). Nicholas Gibson’s Crossle was the top Pre-1982 car in 18th overall.
