Jake Byrne took his Ray to pole position for heat three of the Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, in a session disrupted by rain and two red flags.
Byrne, who is racing occasionally this year around studies, was in a tight battle for pole with several other drivers in the damp but drying conditions. He leapt to the top of the times with five minutes of the session remaining, just before the second of two stoppages.
After running resumed Byrne improved his time with a minute to go to finish half a second clear of Matthew Cowley’s Van Diemen. Almost immediately after that rain started to fall meaning no one could improve and the order was set.
Matt Round-Garrido in his Medina was third with a time 0.7s off Byrne, just ahead of Team USA Scholarship entrant Aaron Jeansonne in his Ray, who was one of the few to make an improvement after the second red flag.
Oliver White ended up fifth quickest in his Medina ahead of Castle Combe and National front runner Luke Cooper’s Swift.
The first red flag stoppage occurred when South African Julian van der Watt went into the gravel at Paddock and later Simon Pruce spun and was stranded at Graham Hill Bend.
